オーストラリア出身のジュエリーデザイナー、クレア・イシノさんに聞きました。

日本にはもともと関心が深かったそうですが、来日後にイメージは変わりましたか？

日本に抱いていたイメージは変りませんが、視野は確かに広がっていると思います。
以前から茶道、着物、和紙や木版画などの伝統文化は知っていましたが今では西洋文化の影響を受けた現代的な面も含んだイメージです。
来日前は日本食は野菜中心だから肉料理はそれほどなくて、野菜が並ぶ青空マーケットがたくさんあるかと思っていました。

My image of Japan has not changed since living here but certainly my view has been expanded. Before coming to Japan, I was aware of traditional Japanese culture such as tea ceremony, kimono, Japanese paper and wood-block prints. That image now includes modern Japan with the influences of western culture. I had heard that Japanese diet was based on vegetables so I imagined that there would be man outdoor markets with fresh vegetables and not so many meat-based dishes.

ニッポンって、変だな～と思う習慣や行動はありますか？

オーストラリアとの違いで驚いたのは、ビジネスマンが真昼間に車を停めて仮眠していたり、女の子がカフェで堂々とお化粧したり髪をカールしたり、ハイヒールで自転車に乗ったり・・。風邪をひいた時のマスクもオーストラリアでは見かけなかったし、スーパーで食品が過剰に包装されすぎなのでは？とヘンに感じました。

I saw some differences between people's behaviour and culture compared to Australian culture. For example I was surprised to see businessmen sleeping in their cars in the middle of the day and girls doing their make-up and curling their hair in a cafe and riding bicycles while wearing high heel shoes. It was unusual to see people wearing cotton masks when they have a cold because this does not happen in Australia. At the supermarket, it was strange to find everything so heavily packaged in such small quantities.

日本で好きな場所・食べ物・お祭りなどは？

日本の静かな場所、山や田園、春の桜に冬の雪などを見るのがとても好きです。
寺社や日本庭園を訪れるのもいいですね。オーストラリアとは違う日本の歴史や文化をより身近に感じられるからです。和紙のお店も一日中いられるくらい好き。食べ物ではお好み焼きですが、可愛らしくてきれいなパッケージの和菓子も好きです。

I like the quiet spaces in Japan; I love seeing the mountains, ricefields, cherry blossoms in Spring and snow in Winter. And I like to visit temples and shrines and Japanese gardens because in those places you can feel closer to Japanese history which is very different from Australian history and culture. I also love standing in Japanese paper shops; I could stay there all day. My favorite Japanese food is Okonomiyaki but I also like Japanese sweets because they are so pretty and beautifully packaged.

日本独自の文化で制作に刺激を受けるものは？

ええ、作品に使っている和紙には刺激を受けました。
また歌舞伎を観て、衣装の色彩に見事なまでの調和を感じました。
作品に色を使う時は、あの調和に挑戦したいと思っています。

Yes, I am inspired by Japanese paper which I am using in my designs. I saw a Kabuki play once and thought the colours of the costumes used a perfect balance of colour; I'm inspired to try to achieve this kind of harmony when I use colour in my designs.

これから制作してみたい作品は？

小さな和紙のコラージュとシルバーの組合せを続けてみたいと思います。

At present I am continuing to work with small collages of washi paper combined with silver.

フォーマルな場面でもカジュアルでも両方で楽しんで下さい。
ジュエリーを作ることは私を幸せな気持ちにしてくれます。この幸せを身に付ける皆さんにもおすそわけできればいいなと思います。

I'd like people to enjoy wearing my jewellery both in formal and casual situations. Making jewellery makes me happy so I hope that happiness is imparted to the wearer's of my pieces.
